Marriott has announced they will be opening the W Budapest in 2020. The hotel will be located within the historic Dreschler Palace at 25 Andrassy Avenue, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, directly across from the State Opera House.
The French Renaissance style building was originally built between 1893 and 1896 as an investment for the Hungarian Railway Pension Institute while the Opera House was still under construction. The building was first a grand apartment building with 24 dwelling units on the upper levels and with a 3-story restaurant below.
In 1949, during Hungary’s communist era, the building was divided up into 38 smaller apartments and the former restaurant space was turned into space for the Hungarian State Ballet Academy. The building was used for this purpose until 2002, which is why many locals call it the “Ballet Institute.” Now, the building has been empty for over 10 years surrounded by construction barricades with broken and boarded up windows and crumbling walls.
Marriott plans to fully renovate the former grand apartment building into a hotel including 162 rooms and suites, including one ‘Extreme WOW Suite’, W Hotel’s version of the typical Presidential Suite. The hotel will also have a restaurant, bar, W’s ‘Living Room’, meeting and event spaces, spa, fitness center, and pool.
This new property will continue helping Marriott with their plan significantly grow in size within Europe by 2020.
Will the new W Budapest inspire you to take a trip to Hungary when it opens in 2020?
