Spirit Airlines joining PreCheck by the End of the Month

1/26/2017 Update: TSA has announced they are adding 11 new airlines to TSA Precheck, including Spirit, effective immediately.

Spirit Airlines posted on their Twitter account earlier this week that they “plan on participating in TSA Precheck by the end of the month.”  This is great news for budget minded travelers who like to fly Spirit. Frontier the other Ultra Low Cost Carrier in the United States joined Precheck last year.

Both airlines were the lone US airline holdouts who had not joined the Precheck program yet.  They were asked last year by the TSA to join the program in attempts to ease the growing lines across the country after policy changes that, for the most part, no longer allowed non-Precheck travelers to use the Precheck lanes randomly causing significantly longer security lines across the country.

Spirit not being a part of Precheck did discourage me from flying them when other Precheck airlines were comparably priced, even sometimes a bit higher, due to the convenience of the program.

If you are considering joining TSA Precheck, be sure to look into the Global Entry program instead.  It is $100, as opposed to Precheck’s $85, just $15 more.  Global Entry is administered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, it allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Members enter the United States through automatic kiosks at select airports. Global Entry also includes TSA Precheck!

The following US airports contain Global Entry lanes for expedited customs and border clearance:

  • Boston-Logan International Airport (BOS)
  • Calgary International Airport (YYC)
  • Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT)
  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
  • Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport (DFW)
  • Denver International Airport (DEN)
  • Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW)
  • Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston (IAH)
  • Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ)
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  • Honolulu International Airport (HNL)
  • John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York (JFK)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • McCarran International Airport, Las Vegas (LAS)
  • Miami International Airport (MIA)
  • Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport (MSP)
  • Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL)
  • Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
  • Orlando International Airport (MCO)
  • Orlando-Sanford International Airport (SFB)
  • Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW)
  • Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
  • Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • San Juan-Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport (SJU)
  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport-SeaTac (SEA)
  • Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)
  • Vancouver International Airport (YVR)
  • Washington-Dulles International Airport (IAD)

To save money, some points and miles credit cards offer annual fee credits for the cost of the Global Entry program if you charge it to the card, and some allow you to use your fee credit for anyone you choose.

Did Spirit not being a part of Precheck discourage you from flying them?
